Prominent Ghanaian public sector unions, under the Forum for Public Sector Associations and Unions, plan to strike nationwide from May 2nd, 2024, due to unresolved pension issues. Issued by Chairman Isaac Bampoe Addo, the strike warning highlights urgent resolution needs by April 30th, 2024. Key healthcare, education, and judicial sectors face disruption if their demands are not met. These issues were first raised in March 2024, indicating significant potential impacts on essential services and public sector operations.
Several prominent public sector unions in Ghana, collectively known as the Forum for Public Sector Associations and Unions, have issued a notice of intention to embark on a nationwide strike starting from May 2nd, 2024. The decision comes as a response to unresolved issues concerning the implementation of pensions for public sector workers.
The notice, signed by Isaac Bampoe Addo, Chairman of the Forum, highlights the urgency of addressing the grievances by April 30th, 2024, failing which the strike action will proceed. The Forum initially raised concerns in a letter dated March 5th, 2024, outlining four key issues affecting the implementation of pensions for public sector workers.
The Forum comprises several influential associations and unions, including the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA), Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Government Hospital Pharmacists’ Association (GHOSPA), Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anesthetists (GACRA), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT), Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG), and Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG).
The looming strike threatens to disrupt various sectors of the economy, including healthcare, education, and the judiciary, if the issues at hand remain unresolved. This development underscores the pressing need for stakeholders to engage in dialogue and find a mutually beneficial solution to avert the potential impact of the strike on essential services and the overall functioning of the public sector.
