The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has made an decision regarding an important development in Ghana’s education landscape. In line with their commitment to continually refine and improve the education system, NaCCA’s management has decided to withdraw the subject “Our World Our People” (OWOP) from the Standards-Based curriculum, and this change will come into effect from the next academic year.
At the core of this decision is NaCCA’s mandate to ensure the highest quality of education for learners. In a meticulous review and comparison, NaCCA assessed both the Religious and Moral Education (RME) and OWOP curricula. The findings revealed significant similarities in sub-strands and focal areas between the two subjects, indicating a repetition of knowledge.
This redundancy prompted the Council’s management to take decisive action. Beyond our internal observations, valuable feedback from teachers further underscored the need for a change. In light of this, NaCCA believes that withdrawing OWOP will streamline the curriculum, allowing for a more focused and enriched learning experience.
The anticipated positive impact of this decision is substantial. By removing the redundancy, educators can now concentrate on the unique strands within Religious and Moral Education. This targeted approach is expected to deepen learners’ understanding of the curriculum, fostering a more engaging and effective educational journey.
In conclusion, NaCCA’s decision to withdraw OWOP is a strategic move aimed at optimizing the Standards-Based Curriculum in Ghana. This adjustment reflects our commitment to continuous improvement and ensuring that learners receive the best possible education, setting the stage for a more enriched and focused academic experience. We look forward to the positive outcomes that this change will bring to the education landscape in Ghana.
