Former Ghanaian President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flag Bearer, John Mahama, made a significant pledge to include private secondary schools in the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme during a recent event.

At the 2024 annual week celebration of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools, Mahama emphasized the indispensable role of private institutions in delivering quality education to Ghanaian youth. He commended their innovation and dedication to nurturing students, particularly those with special needs, owing to their favorable teacher-to-pupil ratios.

Mahama’s Assurance:

Speaking at the occasion, Mahama assured private school stakeholders of the NDC’s commitment to education. He pledged to collaborate closely with all relevant parties to comprehensively review Ghana’s education system, spanning from primary to tertiary levels.

Extension of Free SHS Programme:

Mahama specifically committed to extending the Free SHS programme to private secondary schools. He highlighted the readiness of many private institutions, possessing adequate infrastructure and skilled personnel, to participate in the initiative. This move aims to alleviate the financial burden on parents and the government at the secondary education level and ensure equitable access to quality education for all Ghanaian children.

Investment in Basic Education:

Furthermore, Mahama announced plans for substantial investments in basic education, starting in 2025. This initiative seeks to fortify the foundation of Ghana’s education sector, fostering a conducive environment for learning and development.

Vision for Ghana’s Future:

Expressing his vision for Ghana, Mahama reiterated his belief that every child deserves access to quality education. He called for collective efforts to build a brighter future, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration in shaping the Ghanaian education landscape.

Mahama’s pledge has sparked optimism among private school owners, who see it as a significant step towards enhancing inclusivity and educational opportunities for all Ghanaian children. As the nation looks ahead, Mahama’s commitment to education stands as a cornerstone of his vision for a prosperous and equitable Ghana.
