The Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has disclosed that he believes students who obtained D7 in WASSCE should be given the opportunity to enter tertiary institutions in Ghana if they want to study courses not related to the subject of which they obtained D7.

When asked about the arguments about D7 in a press briefing, the former Mathematics teacher had this to say, “D7 arguments have not been settled, but it will soon be settled. GTEC is coming out of a memo to guide the space.” He noted.

Explaining further why universities in Ghana should admit grade D7 students, he stated, “I believe that we have a student who did General Arts and has a D7 in mathematics, I don’t understand why they can’t move up. But it doesn’t mean that you’re not going to help them correct the deficiency.”

He continued,“What it means is that they can go to the university and do Sociology but not in Mathematics, they may have to do mathematics 101 to make up for any deficiency they have in Mathematics. The same thing applies to those in Science with a lower score D7 in English, and the fact that they can enter to do Engineering doesn’t mean that their English should not be improved upon.”

The Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency in his closing remarks indicated that if Ghanaian students with D7 are given the chance to enter into the universities in UK, then it is time same is applied in Ghana.

“… So, our general understanding is that we provide for them by allowing them the opportunity to enter because they can go to university, why should we prevent them from going into university in our country.” He mentioned.

Commenting on the general performance of the 2021 WASSCE, the teaching Minister said Ghanaians should cheer the candidates up the same for impressive performance this year, adding that if we support the Black Stars when they perform better, then the young guys and ladies deserve the same.
