The government through the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Health Service is going to vaccinate all school children aged fifteen and above in the coming days as part of measures to reduce the spread of the virus in schools.

In a letter sighted By Bricy Boateng, the Director-General of GES, Prof. Kwasi Opoku Amankwah has directed all the Regional Directors of Education to work closely with their colleague Regional and District Directors of Health to facilitate the vaccination of all school children aged 15 and above in both private and public schools across the country.

The Director General of GES noted that, the Ghana Health Service has planned to vaccinate school children from fifteen years and above to increase their level of protection against they Covid-19 virus. This was after the Foods and Drugs Authority (FDA) approved the use of Pfizer BioNTech Covid-19 to cover children aged fifteen and above.

Although it is a laudable initiative by the government of Ghana, the letter did not state whether teachers who have not been vaccinated are also part of the exercise or not. Nevertheless, teachers and other non teaching staff members will know when vaccinators visit their schools.

Furthermore, the letter did not state when the vaccination exercise will be carried out. However, parents, guardians, and teachers should take note that it will take place before school vacates for the third term since Christmas festivities are few days away.

I encourage every parent to personally educate his/her ward about the vaccine and entreat them to avail themselves for the exercise because it will protect them from the deadly virus which has claimed the lives of many souls ever since it was discovered.About the vaccine,

The Pfizer BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine is taken by injection into the body through the upper shoulder. The vaccine is taken in two doses. The second dose is taken after 21 days but later extended to 42 days in the US and four months in Canada according to side effects after taking the vaccine.

According to Wikipedia, most side effects are mild to moderate in severity and are gone within a few days. They include mild to moderate pain at the injection site, fatigue, and headaches. Reports of serious side effects, such as allergic reactions, are very rare and no long-term complications have been reported.
