Mr. Evans Odei, a math teacher at Achimota senior high school, stands the chance of winning $1M cash prize in Global Teachers Prize 2021. Mr. Odei is the only teacher nominated in Ghana and among fifty (50) teachers globally for this year’s prize.
Should he win the prize, the innovative maths teacher will return to Ghana with the said cash prize? His nomination is a reflection of hard work, creativity, and innovation as a teacher in a senior high school.
What makes Mr. Odei special?
Mr. Evans Odei has been in the teaching profession for close to twenty years. In line of his job, the maths teacher founded “Maths Clinic” to build students’ love and interest for mathematics in Swedru School of Business Senior High, where he spent 12 years of his teaching career. He has also taught in many schools in remote villages.
The Maths Clinic was organized on weekends for students who wished to learn maths. Surprisingly, Mr. Odei sacrificed his time and efforts for free to his students. After sometime, the clinic was able to eliminate the fear of Mathematics in students, and it was evident in students’ test scores and WASSCE performances year-on-year.
Soon, his school became one out of 16 regions in Ghana to represent and participate in an international STEM challenge with other schools worldwide. Mr. Odei has received many awards for his immense contribution to the teaching and learning of Mathematics thus, in 2015, he became one of 64 teachers from 13 countries selected to attend International Leaders In Educational Program (ILEP) in Clemson University, South Carolina, USA.
Let us pray for our brother to win the ultimate prize and make Ghanaian teachers and the country as large proud. Meanwhile, be motivated by the efforts made by Mr. Evans Odei as a teacher and make a difference in your little space and quit nagging about your working conditions.
