In a recent Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs meeting in Kumasi, the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, faced inquiries from the Kumasi Traditional Council, led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, regarding the controversial teacher licensure exams.

Commending Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum for education reforms, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II sought clarification on the government’s insistence on conducting teacher licensure exams. He questioned the necessity for teachers to undergo such exams after acquiring relevant qualifications, drawing parallels with the legal and medical professions.

In response, the Education Minister likened teacher licensure exams to those taken by professionals like doctors and lawyers to obtain licenses before practicing. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that teachers, like other professionals, meet certain standards, allowing them to practice not only within Ghana but also internationally.

Dr. Adutwum explained, “Just like lawyers, doctors, and accountants write exams before they practice, we also want teachers to do the same so that they can use their certificates to practice in foreign countries as well. If a teacher goes against the tenets of teaching, his/her license will be withdrawn.”

During a media interview, the Education Minister also addressed the interdiction of eleven Senior High School headteachers, expressing optimism that they would receive a fair hearing. He emphasized the need to approach such situations with an open mind, acknowledging the dedication and commitment of headmasters in the education system.

The meeting shed light on the government’s perspective on teacher licensure exams, aligning them with professional standards and international recognition. The minister’s explanations aimed to address concerns and underscore the importance of maintaining teaching standards through a comprehensive licensing process.
