Some concerned teachers have penned down a long article on the spike in the level of students’ indiscipline in our public schools at the pre-tertiary level. According to the tutors who happen to teach in high school, Civil Societies in Ghana have pampered students to the extreme, making teachers feel weak before them.
Explaining further, the teachers blamed the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch (EduWatch), Mr. Kofi Asare for finding everything wrong with Ghana’s educational system, although he passed through the very system to become who he is today.
In addition, the attributed the hike in students indiscipline to Human Right Advocates who are championing child rights without its associated responsibilities.
In summary, the concerned teachers believe Civil Societies and Human Right Advocates have imported foreign culture into Ghana’s educational system where the use of cane which was a powerful tool to discipline school children have been relegated to the background. Sadly, Ghana’s education has fallen into a deep pit both morally, spiritually and physically, and there is enough evidence to prove this point.
Recently in the news, there have been numerous reports by online news portals about students’ indiscipline in schools. The most current one being the burning of a dormitory block by some final year students of Nyinahini Catholic SHS in the Ashanti region.
As if it was not enough, it was also reported in the news that some final year students of Nkawkaw SHS broke the windshield of an invigilator’s car for allegedly refusing to allow them to cheat in the WASSCE.
Although the Ghana Education Service issued a statement to caution final year students who were candidates in this year’s WASSCE about destroying school properties upon completion, that seemed impractical to the students. The issue of indiscipline in the public schools needs to be looked at once again in holistically.
