In a decisive move, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has aligned itself with the FORUM, a coalition of nine prominent labour unions, in issuing an ultimatum to the government regarding the release of second-tier pension funds.
The announcement was made by TUC Secretary General, Dr. Yaw Baah, during a conference held in Gomoa Fetteh.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Baah emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The forum has already given notice of strike on 2nd May, we will want to send this notice to government that by 30th of April, if they don’t do anything about the second-tier on the 2nd May, we will all join the strike, and I can’t imagine what will happen in this country if they allow this to happen.”
The coalition comprises various influential unions, including the Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG), Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Judicial Service Staff Association (JUSAG), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), Ghana Association of Anesthetists, and the Government and Hospital Pharmacist Association (GHOSPA).
Already, these unions have served notice to commence a nationwide strike on May 2, 2024, if their demands regarding the second-tier pension funds are not met by the government.
The impending strike, involving a wide array of essential sectors, poses a significant challenge to the government and raises concerns about the potential impact on essential services and the nation’s economy. As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on the government’s response to avert what could potentially be a nationwide crisis.
