The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has announced its intention to recruit 2,500 teaching staff, pending financial clearance from the Ministry of Education. This move aims to alleviate the academic workload and ensure that academic activities can promptly resume following a nationwide strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), which began on June 14.

CETAG’s strike was triggered by the government’s failure to implement agreed-upon arbitral awards and other conditions of service for its members. In response, GTEC has assured that once financial clearance is obtained, the recruitment process will be swiftly communicated and implemented to deploy the new staff in a timely manner.

“The Commission is in serious talks with the Honourable Minister of Education for financial clearance to be granted to GTEC to recruit some two thousand five hundred (2,500) teaching staff to augment the current load for academic work to commence as quickly as possible while we work with CETAG to resolve their concerns. GTEC will communicate to you the modalities with which this urgent staff recruitment will be expedited as soon as the clearance is provided,” GTEC stated.

This development is seen as a crucial step in addressing the ongoing challenges in the education sector and ensuring a swift resolution to the disruptions caused by the strike.
