Sefwi Asawinso
The family of a 19-year-old student from St. Andrew Senior High School (SHS) in Sefwi Asawinso, Western North Region, is demanding justice after an alleged assault by two teachers.
The student’s uncle, speaking on behalf of the family, explained that the teachers attacked his nephew while he was on his way to get food. The incident left the student with multiple welts on his back and other parts of his body.
“The child went to class this morning, and afterward, he wanted to get something to eat. He encountered his teacher, who criticized his hair for being too bushy. The teacher then grabbed him by his uniform and caned him. When I saw the child, I asked if he had provoked the teacher, but he said no,” the uncle recounted.
He described the student as very humble, someone who cooks for his father, who runs a chop bar in the village. The uncle emphasized that the student is not known to be abusive and stressed that the incident was serious and unprovoked, merely related to the student’s hairstyle.
Following the assault, the final-year student was rushed to the SDA Clinic in Sefwi Asawinso by his classmates due to the severity of his injuries. The 19-year-old has since received treatment and been discharged.
Lucy Aboagye, a physician assistant at the SDA Clinic, confirmed the incident, stating, “He reported here this morning, and there was evidence. There were marks on his skin that show he was indeed beaten.”
Reports indicate that the teacher in question subjected Ebenezer Yeboah, a final-year Visual Arts student, along with five other students, to severe beatings on January 30, 2024, for failing to pay “dining fees.” The beating left multiple bruises on Yeboah’s face.
Mrs. Lawrinda Yeboah, the victim’s mother, told the media that she was informed by another student that her son had been admitted to the hospital. She was later told that the teacher had beaten him because he could not pay the “dining fees.”
One of the teachers, who requested anonymity, confirmed the story when reporters visited the school.
