The Bolgatanga Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) recently organized a reading festival to enhance reading skills among basic school pupils. The event, held in Bolgatanga, saw the participation of students from various basic schools within the municipality.
The primary objective of the festival was to improve literacy skills and foster a culture of reading among young learners. Fredrick Agunga-Dongo Ayine, the Public Relations Officer for GES in Bolgatanga, highlighted the festival as a crucial response to the need for improved reading skills among pupils.
“The reading festival has become important because, for some time now, surveys indicate that our learners are not able to read fluently by the time they reach basic 2. So with this data that we gathered, we took steps to make sure that we remedy the situation, and part of it is to organize the reading festival,” Mr. Ayine explained.
He further noted that the festival, which began at the school level, progressed to the circuit level, and has now reached the municipal level. The goal is to form a team that will represent the municipality in competitions with other districts.
Municipal Chief Executive Rex Asanga attended the event, stressing the significance of reading in child development and societal growth. Mr. Asanga commended the initiative, noting the enthusiastic response from both pupils and teachers.
