The leadership of three prominent teacher unions in the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regions has issued a stern ultimatum to the government, demanding the immediate payment of certain outstanding allowances or face dire consequences. The unions, comprising the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT-Gh), convened at a press conference in Sunyani to address their grievances.
During the conference, the unions highlighted their dissatisfaction with the government’s sluggish approach and failure to fulfill its obligations outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Specifically, they demanded the prompt disbursement of allowances such as the Deprived Area, Extra Assessment, Book/Data/Online Teaching Support, and Upward Adjustment of Continued Professional Development Allowances by May 13, 2024.
Mr. Adobasom Ibrahim, the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional Secretary of GNAT, emphasized that failure to meet their demands within the stipulated seven-day ultimatum would compel the unions to resort to drastic measures, including a nationwide strike.
Joined by counterparts from NAGRAT and CCT-Gh, Mr. Adobasom further underscored the unions’ call for comprehensive agreements addressing the welfare, job security, and professional development of teachers. He lamented the government’s indifference and delay in finalizing critical documents such as the condition of service and scheme of service, which significantly impact teachers’ employment terms and conditions.
Expressing frustration over the government’s perceived lack of commitment, Mr. Adobasom emphasized the pivotal role teachers play in shaping the nation’s education landscape. He urged the Ghana Education Service to urgently address these concerns and implement a transparent service scheme outlining qualifications for teaching positions.
In conclusion, the unions warned that continued negligence by the government would only exacerbate tensions and hinder the achievement of educational objectives, urging swift action to avert a potential crisis in the education sector.
