There is news in circulation that Social Studies teachers will be left idle some time because it is reported that the Education Ministry will soon scrap the study of the subject in schools.

In the light of this, the National Chairman of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), Dr. Prof. Kwame Osei Kwarteng has rebutted the assertion that the subject will soon be removed from Ghana’s educational curriculum.

He defended his statement by saying that even though children at the basic level are currently learning a newly introduced subject under the Standard-Based Curriculum known as “Our World Our People” (an infusion of diverse subjects including Social Studies), Social Studies was never removed from the previous syllabus.

This is contrary to what the Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Madam Josephine Nkrumah, said earlier. Madam Josephine had previously called for a return of Social Studies in both private and public schools. She disclosed this at the Social Studies National Conference at the University of Education, Winneba.

“Social Studies is the heartbeat of humanity. You cannot take that away. No matter what you do, you will live, work, co-exist, worship, fight, build on peace together as a people. So, there is no reason why Social studies should be scrapped in any shape or form on this earth,” She noted.

She revealed that there are attempts by the Education Ministry to remove the study of the subject in the SHS syllabus. Meanwhile, according to Prof. Kwarteng, Social Studies is currently being studied from Kindergarten to junior high schools except that at the KG and Primary levels, it is known as OWOP.
